"I need a downhill MTB" — often, the person saying that actually needs an enduro. Both are built for gravity, but they don't serve the same purpose. Here's how to decide and not buy the wrong bike.
The fundamental difference
The downhill (DH) bike is a specialized machine: large travel (often 200 mm), very slack geometry, a single short chainring, designed to descend fast down bike park trails and climb back via lift. It pedals poorly uphill — that's not its job.
Enduro is a versatile bike geared toward descending: generous travel (150–170 mm), but capable of climbing by pedaling. It's the bike that climbs to descend better.
How to choose: the real question
Ask yourself one question: do I climb by pedaling, or by mechanical lift?
You ride almost exclusively in bike parks (mechanical lifts) and want pure downhill performance → DH makes complete sense.
You want one bike to climb then descend, do all-mountain rides, bike park occasionally → enduro is the right choice for 90% of riders.
Geometry and travel
DH prioritizes high-speed stability: very slack head angle, long wheelbase, low center of gravity. Enduro borrows these principles in a toned-down version to stay nimble and efficient while pedaling. On paper, a few degrees and millimeters; on the trail, two very different bikes.
Budget and maintenance
A DH stresses brakes, suspension, and tires heavily: maintenance follows. An enduro, more versatile, pays for itself better if you're not only at bike parks. In both cases, the pre-session bike park check and suspension maintenance apply.

I mainly do rides where I climb myself, with two or three bike park weekends a year. DH or enduro?
L'Atelier
Enduro, without question. The moment you're climbing by pedaling, a true DH becomes tedious and pointless most of the time. A good enduro climbs well, descends strong, and handles your bike park weekends. Save pure DH for those riding almost exclusively on mechanical lifts and chasing max downhill performance.
