Tractor winterization: the pre-winter storage checklist

Whether the tractor sleeps all winter or is used only occasionally, proper storage avoids unpleasant surprises: dead battery, frozen circuits, degraded fuel, corrosion. Here is the checklist for worry-free wintering (after fall work preparations).
Cooling system: check the antifreeze
This is the point not to neglect at all: coolant that is too diluted can freeze and crack the block or radiator. Check the antifreeze concentration (sufficient protection for your region) and the condition of the fluid. See tractor coolant.
The battery
Cold puts batteries through a rough time. Disconnect it (or put it on a maintainer), store it charged in a temperate place if possible, and clean the terminals. A discharged battery that freezes is headed for recycling.
Fuel (diesel)
Fill up before wintering: a full tank limits condensation (thus water in the circuit). In very cold areas, "winter diesel" prevents paraffin waxing. Purge the water separator if the tractor is equipped with one.
Fluid levels and lubrication
Oil change if due: better to winter with clean oil (see intervals and oils).
Lubrication of all points (joints, lift linkage): grease protects against corrosion during shutdown.
Hydraulic circuit: level and condition.
Physical storage
Tires inflated to proper pressure (prevents flat spotting); if possible, reduce the weight load.
Dry, covered location; failing that, a breathable tarp.
Exhaust and intake protected from rodents (a rag to be removed before starting).
Before putting it away
A final complete cleaning removes dirt and corrosive residues. Complete with the seasonal maintenance check.

My tractor won't be used over winter, how do I prepare it?
L'Atelier
Priority to the cooling system: verify that the antifreeze protects enough for your region, otherwise the block can freeze and crack. Then battery (disconnected or on a maintainer, kept warm), full tank of diesel to avoid condensation, lubrication of all points against corrosion, and tires at proper pressure. Store it dry under a breathable tarp and protect intake/exhaust from rodents. A final complete cleaning before putting it away finishes the job.
Give your tractor to the mechanic AI: it will give you the customized winterization checklist.
