Spring restart checklist: bringing your motorcycle back after winter storage

You've stored your bike well: now it's time to wake it up without breaking anything. After several months of sitting idle, a few checks prevent breakdowns — or worse, a safety issue on your first ride. Here's the startup checklist (keep it handy for next winter's exit).

Before turning the key

• Tires : check the pressure (it drops during storage) and look for flat spots or cracks. See tire pressure in cold weather.
• Brakes : fluid level and condition, brake pad bite, rotors free of rust. Old fluid should be bled out.
• Battery : if it was on a maintainer, great; otherwise, check voltage and recharge (battery maintenance).
• Leaks : a quick look under the bike (oil, coolant).

At startup

• If fuel wasn't stabilized and sat through winter, be wary of oxidized gas that clogs the idle circuit (see why fuel stabilizer matters).
• Let it warm up gently, without revving when cold.

Fluid levels and maintenance

• Engine oil : if an oil change wasn't done before storage, do it now — oil may have absorbed moisture (oil change guide).
• Coolant : level and condition (motorcycle coolant).
• Chain : cleaning, lubrication, tension.

Your first ride

Take it easy for the first few kilometers: tires are cold and possibly slightly flat-spotted, brakes need to wake up, your reflexes need to come back. A gentle first ride to validate everything.
