Why winterisation matters
A motorcycle stored carelessly will greet you in spring with: dead battery, clogged carburettor, deformed tyres, rust marks. 2 hours of preparation in autumn beats a frustrating and expensive restart.
The winterisation checklist
| Task | Action |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Top up + stabiliser, run for 5 mins to distribute |
| Oil | Oil change BEFORE storage (used oil is acidic) |
| Battery | Disconnect + battery maintainer |
| Tyres | Slightly overinflate, or on centre stand to unload |
| Humidity | Dry location, breathable cover (no plastic sheeting) |
| Lubrication | Chain greased, pivot points, cables |
1. Fuel
Modern fuel (with ethanol) degrades in a few months and clogs the system. Fill the tank (prevents condensation in an empty one) and add a stabiliser, then run the engine for 5 minutes so it reaches the carburettor/injectors. Details in our article on stabiliser before storage.
2. Battery
It's winter's #1 casualty. Disconnect it and connect a battery maintainer (Optimate/CTEK type), or store it somewhere warm and recharge every 1–2 months. See our guide on winter motorcycle battery maintenance.
