The logic of motorcycle servicing

Contrary to popular belief, a motorcycle service isn't a date on the calendar — it's a mileage interval (or annual if you ride infrequently). Each interval adds operations on top of the basic "oil change + checks". Understanding this logic lets you budget ahead and decide what to hand to the pro versus what you do yourself.

This guide covers typical intervals for a modern 4-stroke. Always check the exact interval for your model (it ranges from 6,000 to 12,000 km depending on the manufacturer).

Intervals at a glance

These ranges vary hugely depending on displacement and brand. A Japanese twin costs 2–3× less than a premium 4-cylinder for valve clearance work.

Basic service (6–12,000 km)

The most frequent one. It revolves around the oil change :

This is the most DIY-friendly service. An oil change plus checks saves you £70–100 in labour.

Intermediate service (~20,000 km)

You add wearing parts :

• Brake pads — under 1.5 mm = replacement. Front/rear depending on wear.
• Brake fluid — hygroscopic, it's changed every 2 years regardless of mileage (boiling point drops = fade).
• Air filter — a clogged filter enriches the mix and raises fuel consumption.

Major service (~40,000 km)

The priciest, because of valve clearance :

• Valve clearance check/adjustment — this is the scary item. On a 4-cylinder, access requires removing plenty of parts (2–4 hours labour). On a single or twin, it's more straightforward. Out-of-spec clearance wears valve seats: don't postpone it.
• Coolant — every 2–4 years depending on the manufacturer.

By doing basic services yourself and leaving the valves to the pro, you halve your annual maintenance budget.

The "service book up to date" trap
