Motorcycle Maintenance Costs: What Annual Budget to Plan?

"How much does it cost to maintain a motorcycle per year?" That's THE question every future rider asks. And the honest answer is: it depends. But I'll give you concrete figures based on hundreds of bikes I've seen come through the workshop.

Regular Maintenance Items

Oil Change (every 6,000-10,000 km)

This is the basic, non-negotiable service. Cost varies by sump capacity and oil type:

CategoryOil CapacityOil + FilterLaborTotal
125 cc1-1.2 L15-20 EUR30-40 EUR45-60 EUR
Naked 500-700 cc2.5-3 L30-45 EUR40-50 EUR70-95 EUR
Adventure 1000+ cc3.5-4 L45-60 EUR50-70 EUR95-130 EUR
Sport 1000 cc3-3.5 L50-70 EUR50-70 EUR100-140 EUR
Tip: doing your own oil change saves 30-70 EUR in labor. It's the simplest operation to DIY.

Tires (every 8,000-15,000 km)

The rear tire wears roughly twice as fast as the front. Budget by usage:

Tire TypeFrontRearFitting (x2)Total
Sport touring80-120 EUR100-150 EUR40-60 EUR220-330 EUR
Sport100-150 EUR130-180 EUR40-60 EUR270-390 EUR
Adventure (dual)90-130 EUR110-160 EUR40-60 EUR240-350 EUR
125 cc50-70 EUR60-90 EUR30-40 EUR140-200 EUR

Chain Kit (every 20,000-30,000 km)

The chain kit includes the chain, front sprocket and rear sprocket. Never replace just one component — the trio wears together.

  • 125 cc: 60-100 EUR (kit) + 50-80 EUR (labor) = 110-180 EUR
  • 500-700 cc: 100-160 EUR + 60-90 EUR = 160-250 EUR
  • 1000 cc: 150-250 EUR + 70-100 EUR = 220-350 EUR

Brake Pads (every 10,000-20,000 km)

  • Front (2 calipers): 30-60 EUR + 30-40 EUR labor
  • Rear: 15-30 EUR + 20-30 EUR labor
  • Total: 95-160 EUR on average

Brake Fluid (every 2 years)

Often forgotten but critical for safety: 30-60 EUR all-in.
