Heated Grips for Motorcycles: Choosing and Installing Without Draining the Battery

Hands are the first thing to freeze when riding a motorcycle. Heated grips extend the riding season by several months on a modest budget. What's left is choosing the right type and wiring them properly—that's where reliability and electrical safety come into play.

Two Types

• Integrated heated grips: they replace your factory grips. Clean finish, even heat, but installation takes a bit longer.
• Sleeves / wrap-around tape: sit on top of your existing grips. Quick to install, less elegant, heat distribution sometimes less consistent.

For regular winter use, integrated grips are the best choice.

What Makes a Good Heated Grip

• Multiple heat settings (at least 3-5) to adapt to weather conditions.
• Good heat distribution across the entire grip, including under the palm.
• Temperature regulation that maintains heat without fluctuations.

Wiring: The Critical Point

Heated grips draw current. Two rules:

1. Wire to battery positive through the ignition switch (via a relay if needed), not directly to the battery: this way they shut off when you kill the engine, and won't drain the battery if you forget to turn them off.
2. Respect the current draw: add a dedicated fuse. If your bike has a marginal battery, avoid stacking too many electrical accessories (see winter battery maintenance).

Winter Best Practice

Heated grips + good windscreen + proper gloves: the trio that changes everything in winter. Turn them off at extended idle if your battery is weak.
