Top-cases and motorcycle luggage: choosing rigid luggage

For daily commutes and long journeys alike, rigid luggage is a game-changer: you can safely store your helmet and belongings, sheltered from the rain. But you still need to choose the right setup. Here are the key criteria.

Top-case or side cases?

• Top-case: the most versatile for everyday use. It swallows a full-face helmet, loads from the top, perfect for city riding and errands. Watch out for high-mounted weight that affects handling.
• Side cases: true volume for touring, with low and centered weight (better handling). They widen your motorcycle — watch for traffic clearance.
• A combination of both: the full touring solution, for heavy-duty travel.

Volume, in liters

• 28-35 L: one helmet, daily use (top-case).
• 35-45 L: two people or a weekend trip (side cases).

Mounting: the key point

Rigid luggage mounts on a plate/rack specific to your motorcycle model. That's often the real cost, and it determines compatibility. Check that the rack exists for your bike before buying the cases. A quick-release system (single key, tool-free removal) is real convenience.

Waterproofing and security

Good rigid luggage is waterproof and lockable. Check the seals and lock. Never exceed the maximum load specified by the rack and motorcycle manufacturer.
