Motorcycle Intercom: How to Choose Your Bluetooth Kit

A motorcycle intercom (or Bluetooth kit) lets you listen to GPS, music, take phone calls, and chat with other riders. They're not all the same, and the right choice depends mainly on how you ride: solo, with a passenger, or in a group.
First: What's Your Use Case?
Solo: you just want GPS, music, and phone. An entry-level model is enough.
Two riders (driver/passenger): prioritize good audio quality and stable short-distance connection.
In a group: this is where technology matters (see "mesh" below).
Bluetooth vs Mesh
Classic Bluetooth: connects 2 to 4 helmets in a chain. Simple and economical, but if a rider moves away or disconnects, the chain breaks.
Mesh: helmets form a network that rebuilds itself automatically when someone moves away or returns. Much smoother in a group, but more expensive.
For riding solo or as a pair, Bluetooth is enough. For regular group rides, mesh is worth the investment.
Technical Criteria
Criteria
What to Look For
Battery Life
10 hours + for long days
Range
Advertised in open terrain, divide by half in reality
Waterproofing
Essential in the rain
Audio
Quality speakers, microphone noise reduction
Compatibility
Interoperability between brands remains limited
Installation
Most kits attach to the helmet shell (clip or glue) with speakers in the padding and a mic in front of the mouth. Get the mic positioning right to be heard at speed.

We often ride 4 or 5 bikes and the Bluetooth connection keeps dropping. What should we get?
L'Atelier
With 4-5 bikes, that's exactly where mesh makes the difference: the network rebuilds itself when someone moves away or returns, whereas Bluetooth in chain breaks as soon as one link disconnects. Also aim for good battery life (10+ hours) and real speakers. If you mainly ride as a pair the rest of the time, mesh is still compatible with simple use.
