Motorcycle Helmet: How to Choose (Types, ECE 22.06 Standard, Sizing)

The helmet is the only piece of gear that protects your head — so choose it carefully. Beyond style, three things matter: the type suited to your riding, the certification standard, and most importantly the size. Here's how to decide.

Choose the type based on your use

• Full-face : maximum protection (fixed chin bar), quietest and safest. For road riding, highway, track days.
• Modular : chin bar flips up, convenient at stops and for eyeglass wearers. Slightly heavier and noisier. Ideal for touring (see our guide modular touring helmets).
• Open-face : open, airy, urban — but no chin protection.
• Dirt bike / adventure : wide visor and large opening for goggles, for off-road and trail riding.

The standard: ECE 22.06

In Europe, a helmet must be certified. The current ECE 22.06 standard tests more impact points and rotational forces than the older 22.05. Check the label sewn into the chin strap. It's a legal minimum — see mandatory motorcycle safety gear.

Finding your correct size (the decisive step)

A too-large helmet won't protect you. The method:

1. Measure your head circumference with a tape measure, above your eyebrows, at the widest point.
2. Cross-reference the measurement with the brand's sizing chart (sizes vary by manufacturer).
3. When trying it on, the helmet must be snug without discomfort : it shouldn't rotate or move when you shake your head, and the cheeks should be firmly held (the padding compresses slightly with use).

Details that make the difference

• Weight : a few hundred grams add up over a long ride.
• Visor : scratch-resistant, Pinlock anti-fog coating, internal sun visor.
• Ventilation and noise : essential in summer and on the highway.
