Which bike for commuting? City, gravel, folding or electric

There is no universal "best commute bike": there is the bike adapted to your route. Distance, terrain, parking, ability to shower at the office: these criteria matter more than fashion. Here's how to decide.

Criterion #1: distance

  • Less than 5 km, flat: a simple city bike or a folding bike is more than enough. No need to over-equip.
  • 5 to 15 km: a hybrid or a gravel bike offers the right balance of speed and comfort. This is the sweet spot for efficient muscle-powered cycling.
  • More than 15 km, or with hills, or the desire to arrive without sweating: an e-bike (electrically assisted bicycle) changes the game. This is where it pays for itself fastest.

The city / Dutch bike

Upright position, integrated fenders and racks, reduced maintenance (sometimes belt drive and hub gears): ideal for short urban rides. Less lively over distance. See our comparison Dutch bike vs hybrid.

The hybrid and gravel

The hybrid (or VTC) is the Swiss Army knife: fast enough, comfortable, robust. Gravel, more sporty, devours kilometers and tolerates rough roads. Both easily accept racks and fenders.

The folding bike

King of intermodality: train + bike, apartment with no storage, office with no parking. You fold it, stash it under your desk, no theft risk. The trade-off: small wheels are less comfortable over long distances and cobblestones.

The e-bike, to erase distance and elevation

Electric assistance removes excuses (hills, distance, heat). The extra cost pays for itself quickly when you replace car trips. To choose motor, battery and range well, rely on the e-bike buying guide 2026, and think about the bike-to-work scheme which can significantly reduce the cost.

12 km a day with two good climbs, I want to arrive without being in a sweat. Muscle-powered or electric?

With elevation gain and the goal of arriving dry, the e-bike is clearly the way to go: assistance smooths out the climbs and you control the effort. Over 12 km it pays for itself quickly against the car. Focus mainly on real-world range and motor brand for warranty support. In muscle-powered, a light gravel bike is still doable if you're already fit.

Once you've chosen the type, how to gear up properly for commuting covers the rest. And if you're looking at used, our guide what's my used bike worth keeps you from overpaying.
