Back-to-work commuting: gear your bike for rain and cold

Back-to-school changes everything

September means the return of bike commuting — but with rain, cold mornings and darkness falling earlier. A bike set up for summer will leave you soaked, poorly lit and slipping. Here are the 5 areas to sort out before the first downpours.

The 5-point checklist

ItemWhyPriority
MudguardsPrevents mud streaks down your back and soggy feetHigh
LightsVisibility and being seen from 18:00-19:00 onwardsHigh (legal requirement)
TyresGrip on wet surfaces and fallen leavesMedium
BrakesStopping distance × 2 in the rainHigh
Frame protectionAnti-corrosion (salt, water)Low

1. Mudguards Essential. A rear mudguard + flap prevents water spray down your back, whilst the front guards your feet and drivetrain. On a bike without eyelets, quick-release models (clip-type) do the job. Details on choosing and fitting in our dedicated guide.

2. Lights From back-to-school onwards, you're often riding home in the dark. The law requires a white front light + red rear light. Aim for at least 30 lumens on the rear to be seen, over 100 lumens on the front to see properly. Check the actual runtime and recharge at weekends.

3. Brakes and tyres In the rain, braking distance doubles. Check brake pad/block wear before autumn arrives. On tyres, a soft compound with light tread grips better on wet surfaces and fallen leaves — the classic September hazard.

4. Anti-corrosion Water and (later) salt attack the chain and fasteners. Lubricate the chain with a "wet" product (resists washout) and wipe down the frame after soaked rides.
