Freewheel vs cassette: understanding the difference and choosing right

Two systems, one goal

Freewheel and cassette serve the same purpose: transmitting pedaling force to the rear wheel while allowing you to coast when you stop pedaling. But mechanically, they are two completely different worlds.

The freewheel is a monolithic block that threads directly onto the hub. The freewheeling mechanism (the pawls that make the clicking sound) is built into the sprocket block. You'll find it on 1 to 7-speed bikes, mainly entry-level, city bikes, and vintage models.

The cassette is a set of individual sprockets (or riveted groups) that slides onto a splined freehub body. The freewheeling mechanism lives inside the hub, not in the sprockets. It's the standard for 7 to 12-speed setups on all quality bikes.

How to tell them apart visually

The simplest way: look at the center of your rear sprockets.

  • Freewheel: you'll see a notched center nut (often two notches) or sometimes a smooth hole. The removal tool is a freewheel extractor that fits into those notches
  • Cassette: you'll see a splined lockring. The removal tool is a lockring tool (Shimano HG or SRAM XD compatible depending on the standard)
Tip: if you spin the sprockets backward by hand, on a freewheel the entire block rotates. On a cassette, only the sprockets turn while the freehub body clicks inside the hub.

Why the cassette replaced the freewheel

The cassette became dominant for several technical reasons:

  • Axle rigidity: on a threaded freewheel, the axle is only supported on one side of the sprocket block. Result: the axle frequently breaks on the drive side (the infamous "broken hollow axle"). On a cassette, the right-side bearing sits closer to the frame, giving the axle better support
  • Speed count: beyond 7 sprockets, the freewheel becomes too wide and the axle too fragile. Cassettes allow 8, 9, 10, 11, and even 12 speeds
  • Serviceability: you can replace an individual sprocket on a cassette. With a freewheel, it's all or nothing
  • Compatibility: Shimano HG (HyperGlide) cassettes are compatible with nearly every freehub body on the market. Standards are well defined (HG, Micro Spline, XD/XDR)

Which tool for removal?

  • Freewheel: freewheel extractor (Park Tool FR-1.3 or equivalent) + 24 mm adjustable wrench. Thread the tool into the center, then unscrew counterclockwise. Warning: it's often extremely tight
  • HG cassette: chain whip + lockring tool (Park Tool FR-5.2). The whip holds the cassette while you unscrew the lockring

Can you convert from freewheel to cassette?

No, not directly. The hub must have a built-in freehub body. If your hub is threaded for a freewheel, you need to replace the entire hub — which usually means a whole new wheel. It's an upgrade worth doing if you want to move to 8 speeds and beyond.
