Why Shimano generations cause confusion
You want to upgrade your MTB drivetrain and you find yourself in a compatibility maze. 10-speed, 11-speed, 12-speed: each generational leap changed fundamental standards. The freehub body, cable pull ratio, sprocket spacing — everything shifts with each iteration.
The result? You cannot simply mount a 12s cassette on an 11s hub, or use an SLX derailleur with a Deore shifter from a different generation without checking compatibility.
The Shimano MTB range table
Here is the overview by speed count and tier:
- 10-speed: Deore M6000, SLX M670, XT M780, XTR M980 — standard HG freehub body, identical cable pull ratio across tiers
- 11-speed: Deore M5100, SLX M7000, XT M8000, XTR M9000 — standard HG freehub body, new cable pull ratio (incompatible with 10s shifters)
- 12-speed (HG+): Deore M6100, SLX M7100, XT M8100 — Micro Spline freehub body, unified 12s cable pull ratio
- 12-speed (top tier): XTR M9100 — Micro Spline, Di2 compatible (XTR M9050 for electronic version)
Watch out: the Deore M6100 12s uses Micro Spline, not HG. This is the classic trap when upgrading from 10s or 11s — your hub must be compatible or you need to swap the freehub body.
HG vs Micro Spline: the breaking point
The switch to Micro Spline is the most structural change in recent years. This smaller freehub body allows mounting a 10-tooth cog (instead of 11 minimum on HG), which opened the door to 10-51 cassettes.
Practical consequence: if your hub runs HG, you have two options to go 12-speed:
- Buy a Micro Spline freehub body compatible with your hub (DT Swiss, Shimano...)
- Use a 12s cassette compatible with HG (some Deore M6100 cassettes come in an HG version, but with an 11-tooth minimum cog)
