Wheel diameter is more than just a number

Your wheel diameter affects everything: frame geometry, cornering behavior, obstacle clearance, weight, and even the range of available tires. Before swapping wheels or buying a bike, you need to understand what each size actually delivers.

The three current standards are 26 inches (559 mm ETRTO), 27.5 inches (584 mm ETRTO, also called 650B), and 29 inches (622 mm ETRTO, identical to 700C road).

26 inches: the historical standard

The 26" dominated mountain biking for 30 years. Today, it remains relevant in several scenarios:

  • Dirt jump and pump track: the smaller wheel is lighter, more reactive, and handles landings better
  • Kids' bikes (from about 135 cm tall): proper frame-to-wheel proportion
  • Folding bikes: some high-end models use 26" wheels
  • Touring bikes: you can find 26" tires anywhere in the world, even in remote areas
The 26" isn't "obsolete." It has simply become a specialized format rather than the universal standard.

ETRTO: 559 mm. Typical inner rim width: 23-30 mm. Common tires: 2.1" to 2.5".

27.5 inches: the versatile compromise

The 27.5" (650B) has established itself as the go-to enduro and all-mountain format:

  • Agility: lighter wheel, easier to accelerate than a 29"
  • Lateral stiffness: shorter spokes = stiffer wheel, better power transfer
  • Rider size: ideal for riders under 170 cm who find 29" too large
  • Enduro/DH: many enduro and downhill frames remain 27.5" for maneuverability

ETRTO: 584 mm. Typical inner rim width: 25-35 mm. Common tires: 2.3" to 2.8" (or even 3.0" in plus size).

29 inches: the steamroller

The 29" has become the standard for XC, trail, and marathon:

  • Obstacle clearance: the shallower angle of attack lets you roll over roots and rocks without slowing down
  • Stability: larger contact patch = better grip, especially in straight lines
  • Speed retention: once rolling, the larger wheel maintains speed better (higher rotational inertia)
  • XC racing: 100% of the World Cup peloton rides 29"

Downsides: heavier wheel (+150 to 200 g per wheel vs 27.5"), slower acceleration, sometimes tall geometry on small frame sizes (S and XS).

The mullet: 29" front, 27.5" rear

The mullet (or mixed wheel) setup combines a 29" wheel up front and a 27.5" at the rear. The idea:

  • 29" front: better obstacle clearance, downhill stability, confidence
  • 27.5" rear: lower center of gravity, snappier acceleration, more playful rear end

This setup is hugely popular in enduro (Specialized Enduro, YT Capra MX, Santa Cruz Megatower). The frame must be designed for it — you can't just put a 27.5 wheel on a 29" frame without altering the geometry (bottom bracket too low, head angle changed).

Impact on geometry

Changing wheel size modifies:

  • Bottom bracket height: approximately +13 mm between 27.5 and 29
  • Head tube angle: a larger wheel slackens the head angle
  • Wheelbase: increases with wheel diameter
  • Tire clearance: always check that the frame and fork accept the target diameter + tire width

Simple rule: if you ride XC or trail, go 29". If you ride enduro or DH and are under 175 cm tall, 27.5" may suit you better. 26" is reserved for dirt, pump track, kids' bikes, and world tourers.
