The Suzuki V-Strom 650 is a versatile adventure tourer powered by a 645 cc V-twin renowned for its bulletproof reliability. It's an easy bike to maintain and forgiving, but a few areas deserve your attention to keep it running smoothly beyond 150,000 km.
A reliable V-twin that demands consistency
The V-Strom's V-twin is one of the most durable engines in its class. When looked after properly, it ages very well.
| Operation | Service interval |
|---|---|
| Oil and filter change | 6,000 km |
| Valve clearance check | 24,000 km |
| Air filter | 18,000 km |
| Spark plugs | 12,000 to 18,000 km |
| Coolant | every 2 to 3 years |
Valve clearance rarely drifts out of spec, but the check at 24,000 km should still be carried out. It's accessing the rear cylinder head that takes time, not the job itself.
Oil: the top priority
The Suzuki V-twin appreciates 10W-40 full synthetic JASO MA2 oil, thanks to its wet clutch. Sticking to the oil-change interval is what gives it its legendary longevity.
- Capacity approximately 2.7 to 3.1 litres with filter.
- Check level via sight glass, bike upright and at operating temperature.
- For guidance on choosing the right oil, see motorcycle oil viscosity and specifications.
Representative torque settings
Indicative values — verify them for your model year. The platform has evolved across generations (carburettor, fuel injection, Euro 4, Euro 5).
| Component | Torque setting |
|---|---|
| Spark plug | 11 Nm |
| Drain plug | 23 Nm |
| Front wheel axle | 65 Nm |
| Rear wheel nut | 100 Nm |
| Front caliper bolt | 39 Nm |
For the correct technique, consult the motorcycle torque settings table.
