The battery: the heart of your e-bike
The battery is the most expensive component on your Bosch e-bike — between 500 and 900 euros depending on the model. Taking care of it means extending your bike's lifespan by several years.
Golden rule for storage: keep your battery between 30% and 60% charge when you are not riding for more than two weeks. A battery stored at 100% degrades faster, and a battery stored at 0% risks dropping below the critical voltage threshold.
How many cycles before replacement?
Bosch PowerTube and PowerPack batteries are rated for 500 to 1,000 complete cycles (from 0% to 100%). In practice, that represents between 25,000 and 50,000 km depending on your usage profile.
What reduces battery life:
- Systematically charging to 100% when you only need 60%
- Leaving the battery discharged for several months
- Exposing the battery to extreme temperatures (above 40°C or below -10°C)
- Using a non-Bosch-approved charger
After 500 cycles, remaining capacity is typically 60 to 70%. The battery still works, but range drops noticeably.
Motor diagnostics: the telltale signs
The Bosch motor (Performance Line, Performance Line CX, Active Line) is robust, but it can show signs of wear:
- Abnormal noise: clicking or rumbling may indicate worn internal bearings. This is the most common sign after 15,000-20,000 km.
- Intermittent power loss: often linked to a connector issue between the motor and battery. Check the contacts and clean them.
- Error displayed on the screen: each Bosch error code has a specific meaning. The most common: error 503 (motor communication), error 530 (speed sensor).
The speed sensor: small but critical
The speed sensor consists of a magnet mounted on a spoke and a sensor on the chainstay. If the gap between them exceeds 5 mm, the system cuts assistance.
Symptoms of a misaligned sensor:
- Assistance cuts out randomly
- Displayed speed is erratic or stuck at 0
- Motor does not start even though the battery is charged
The fix: check the magnet alignment. It should pass directly in front of the sensor with each wheel revolution. Tighten the magnet on the spoke if needed.
