The electric-assist bicycle (e-bike) has established itself as the most efficient urban transport. Faster than a car during rush hour, more pleasant than a bus, more reliable than a scooter. In 2026, the market offers a massive choice. Let us help you navigate it.

Essential criteria

Motor: hub or mid-drive?

• Rear hub motor: simple, quiet, cheaper. Feels like a "push." Ideal for flat terrain. Ex: Cowboy, VanMoof.
• Mid-drive motor: more natural feel, better on hills, uses the bike's gears. More expensive but better performance. Ex: Bosch, Shimano Steps, Brose.

For pure urban use on flat terrain, a hub motor is more than enough. If you have hills, go mid-drive.

Battery and range

Range depends on capacity (Wh), assist mode, terrain and your weight:

Beware manufacturer claims: they're measured in Eco mode, flat terrain, 70 kg rider. In reality, divide by 1.5 if you ride in Sport mode with hills.

Weight

A city e-bike weighs between 18 and 28 kg. That's a lot. If you need to carry it up stairs, this is a critical criterion:

• Light (< 20 kg): Cowboy 4 (19.1 kg), Canyon Commuter:ON 7 (19.8 kg)
• Medium (20-24 kg): the majority of city e-bikes
• Heavy (> 24 kg): models with large batteries or robust frames (Riese & Muller)

• Max power: 250 W nominal
• No registration or mandatory helmet (but recommended)

The purchase is just the beginning:

• Annual maintenance: €100-200 (brakes, tires, chain, adjustments)
• Battery replacement: €400-800 (after 500-1,000 cycles, i.e. 3-5 years)
• Puncture-proof tires: €30-50 per pair (strongly recommended in cities)
• Serious lock: €60-120 (Kryptonite, Abus — mandatory)
• Insurance: €50-100/year (theft + damage, recommended for e-bikes > €2,000)
