Under 10 km, almost any bike will do. Beyond 15 km per trip — 30 km round trip, every day — long-distance commuting becomes an endurance project that demands the right equipment and real logistics. Here's how to make it sustainable.
E-Bike or muscle-powered?
On a long daily commute, the E-Bike changes everything: it smooths terrain, reduces sweat and fatigue, and makes the journey repeatable day after day without exhausting you. Aim for a generous battery (range drops when loaded and in cold) and possibly a second battery. Muscle-powered remains viable if you're trained and the terrain is rolling — but assistance is what makes the practice last.
Position: comfort over performance
15 km twice a day isn't a time trial. A straight to slightly sporty position, a saddle fitted to your pelvis, handlebars that don't crush your hands: comfort comes before aero. A basic position analysis avoids pain that builds up through repetition.
Range and reliable mechanics
On distance, a breakdown costs you (delays, walking sections). Priority goes to reliability: anti-puncture reinforced tyres, robust drivetrain (single-speed or hub), disc brakes. Carry a minimal repair kit. The technical assistant helps you anticipate wear based on your mileage — which climbs fast at 300 km/week.
