The Yamaha XT 500 remains one of the most iconic trail bikes ever built. Between its birth in 1976 and the end of production in 1989, this 499 cc 4-stroke single conquered the Paris-Dakar and thousands of enthusiasts. Today, a nice XT 500 can be worth between €3,500 for a running model and €8,000 for a collector's piece. But restoring one of these machines requires realism: the pitfalls are numerous and the budget climbs quickly. After supporting several complete restorations in the workshop, I'm sharing the critical points to check before pulling out the checkbook.

The cylinder and piston: where everything is decided

The big weak point of the XT 500 is its cylinder. Vertical scratches on the walls are commonplace, especially on 80s machines that ran with low-grade mineral oils. During inspection, run your hand inside the cylinder after removing the head: the slightest snag under your fingers means mandatory reboring.

A cylinder in good condition measures exactly 87 mm diameter as original. The first repair oversize goes to 87.5 mm with a piston oversized by 0.5 mm. You can go up to +1 mm without problem, but beyond that, the wall becomes too thin and heat dissipation deteriorates. Reboring at a good machine shop costs between €150 and €200. Add €180 for a quality Wössner piston with rings and pin.

Another common problem: cylinders cracked at the head mounting points. Previous owners tightened the nuts to 40 N·m instead of the 30 N·m recommended by Yamaha. This small difference created microcracks that enlarge with thermal cycles. A cracked cylinder means heading to the scrapyard or art foundry.

The kickstarter and its reputation as an ankle destroyer

The XT 500's kickstarter built the legend... and broke a few shins. This 499 cc with high compression ratio (9.2:1) demands precise technique. But the real problem is the kick mechanism itself, which wears out quickly.

The kick ratchet and its wave washer wear through friction. Classic symptoms: the kick that slips, that refuses to return to position, or worse, that locks in the extended position. Repair involves complete disassembly of the right case. Count on 3 good hours of work if you're skilled, double for a first time.

The crankshaft's toothed sector can also show rounded teeth after 40,000 km or more. There, it's mandatory engine splitting, so minimum €600 labor at a shop if you don't do it yourself. A used crankshaft in good condition can be found between €200 and €350.

Old hand's tip: to start an XT 500, bring the kick up to the compression point, raise it slightly, then strike with a sharp blow while keeping your leg straight. Never weak attempts that wear the mechanism without turning the engine.

CDI ignition: the electronic Achilles heel

XT 500s produced after 1978 switched to CDI electronic ignition, abandoning classic points. In theory, it's progress. In practice, these Yamaha CDI boxes age poorly. Internal capacitors degrade, causing misfires, hot start refusals, or untimely shutdowns.

Testing a defective CDI remains complicated without an oscilloscope. Symptoms resemble those of a dead spark plug, bad coil, or tired stator. The process of elimination takes time. A new original CDI no longer exists at Yamaha since 2015. Solutions:

The original stator outputs between 120 and 150 watts at 5,000 rpm. Insufficient to ride at night with lights on if the battery is dead. Replacing the stator costs €95 for a compatible aftermarket part. The regulator-rectifier also regularly fails after 30 years of service. A modern MOSFET-type regulator (€35) definitively solves charging problems.

Forums like XT500.fr and Classic-Motorbikes are full of private ads. Tested used parts circulate there at fair prices.

YEAD (Yamaha Europe After-sales Division) still offers some original references, especially gaskets and bearings. Delays are lengthening: 3 to 6 weeks for certain parts.

Current market value and sought-after years

The XT 500 market has exploded in the last five years. A complete machine needing restoration sells for between €1,500 and €2,500. A decent running model starts at €3,500. The finest pieces reach €8,000, sometimes more for very special versions.

Prized years:

1976-1977: the first series with yellow and black graphics, 9-liter tank, 35 mm fork. Ultra-reliable engine but modest performance. Value: €4,500 to €7,000 in good condition.

1979-1981: improved versions with 38 mm fork, 12-liter tank, better seat. CDI replaces points in 1979. Value: €3,800 to €6,500.

1983-1984: the final evolutions with white and red bodywork, dual-piston front brake. More modern but less "vintage". Value: €3,200 to €5,500.

The "L" (low-seat) models with lowered seat of 815 mm instead of 865 mm are rare. Their value exceeds standard versions by about 20%.

Beware of machines imported from Australia or the United States. Odometers often show over 60,000 miles (96,000 km) and storage conditions in humid climates accelerate corrosion. Import paperwork also complicates resale in France.
