Bike purchase grant in Grenoble, France, in 2026: scheme ended, amounts and what's left

Verified on 16 October 2026 on the SMMAG bike purchase grant portal, the Grenoble Alpes Métropole page and the low-emission zone grants and pathways page.

The key information first: the Grenoble bike purchase grant has come to an end. The portal of the SMMAG (the Grenoble area's mobility authority, which runs the grant) says so in black and white: "After 3 years, the scheme has come to an end. Claims received up to 30 September will be processed. Vouchers already issued can be used as normal (up to 30 days after they were issued)."

The Grenoble Alpes Métropole page still shows the amounts, with no date: it has clearly not been updated. If you received a voucher before the end, use it quickly; otherwise, here is what you need to know.

What about the "€1,500 in Grenoble"?

This figure circulates on blogs and comparison sites. It does not match any official page we consulted. The maximum purchase grant was €500, for an electrically assisted cargo or adapted bike. The figure may come from an assumed combination with other schemes (low-emission zone, former state grants): don't rely on it.

What the scheme paid

For the record, and because claims filed before 30 September are still being processed:

BikeMaximum grant
Non-electric bike€50
Cargo or adapted bike€200
Electrically assisted bike€250
Electrically assisted cargo or adapted bike€500

Its particular features:

  • Means-tested (reference taxable income per tax share), except for people with reduced mobility buying an adapted bike.
  • Application before purchase: you received a voucher to present at a partner shop or association, with no money paid upfront.
  • Voucher valid for 30 days after issue.
  • No resale of the subsidised bike for 3 years.
  • New or used, from a partner.

The review published by the Metropole in autumn 2025 shows the scale: €4.3 million paid out between October 2023 and May 2025, 5,451 bikes bought, 96% new and 93% electric, with 93% of beneficiaries in the two lowest income deciles. The grant was suspended in May 2025 (budget exhausted and fraud detected), then relaunched in late October 2025 with a €900,000 budget, announced at the time as running until the end of 2026 (according to Place Gre'net). The official portal now announces the end, without saying whether the budget has run out.

Had you applied before 30 September?

The SMMAG says that claims received up to 30 September will be processed. In practice:

  • if you have already received your voucher, it remains valid 30 days after issue: go to the partner shop or association before it expires, the grant is deducted directly from the price;
  • if your claim is still being processed, wait for the answer before buying: the scheme works on the principle that the voucher comes before the purchase, and a bike bought before receiving it cannot be subsidised;
  • if in doubt, the mobility agency answers on 04 38 70 38 70.

According to the portal, a claim filed after 30 September no longer has a scheme to attach to.

What remains in Grenoble

The low-emission zone "try other mobility" pathway

Grenoble's low-emission zone (ZFE) offers a Pathway 1 for households wanting to try doing without their car (at least partly):

  • €1,000 per household for one year, to spend on mobility services: M réso public transport, regional coaches, TER trains, Mvélo+ bike rental, self-service bikes and scooters, Citiz car sharing, M covoit' carpooling.
  • If, after one year, you give up your vehicle, you can receive €1,000 a year for two more years.
  • Condition: reference taxable income per share below €26,200.

It is not a bike purchase grant, but for a modest household, €1,000 of Mvélo+ rental and public transport is worth far more than a €250 premium. Pathway 2 (vehicle replacement grant) has been suspended since 26 September 2025. Detailed conditions and applications: low-emission zone page, or the mobility agency on 04 38 70 38 70.

Mvélo+: public long-term rental

Mvélo+ is one of France's largest public bike rental services, with several thousand bikes (nearly 9,000 according to the tourist office) and agencies at the station, on the campus and on the Presqu'île. It offers standard bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes and children's bikes. Long-term prices are on veloplus-m.fr; we don't reproduce them as we have not verified them for 2026. Renting an e-bike for several months remains the best way to find out whether you really need one. To compare with private offers: our comparison of long-term rental.

The sustainable mobility allowance

Up to €600 a year tax-free if your employer introduces it, €900 combined with its contribution to your public transport pass (official page). It is now the most rewarding grant in Grenoble for an employee.

The Region and the Département

We found no bike purchase grant for individuals from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region or the Isère Département active in October 2026. Le Grésivaudan, which took part in the same scheme, is affected by the same end.

If you buy anyway

Without a premium, you are no longer tied to a partner shop. Three ways to cut the bill:

  1. Private second-hand or refurbished. A two- or three-year-old e-bike often sells for 50-60% of the new price. Check the battery above all: our refurbished e-bike guide.
  2. A conversion kit on a sound bike, fitted by a workshop, as long as it stays compliant (250 W, 25 km/h — see 25 vs 45 km/h).
  3. Selling your old bike at the right price: value your bike before publishing the ad.

Which bike for Grenoble?

The valley floor is flat, but as soon as you climb towards the Bastille, Saint-Égrève or the Champagnier plateau, assistance changes everything. Cold winters cut battery range by 20 to 30%: plan for comfortable capacity and store the battery somewhere warm. Our comparisons: the best city bikes of 2026 and family cargo bikes.

Key points

  • The Grenoble area's bike purchase grant has ended (claims received up to 30 September processed, vouchers valid 30 days).
  • It paid €50 to €500 depending on the bike, means-tested — never €1,500.
  • What remains: the low-emission zone pathway (€1,000/year of mobility services, RFR/share < €26,200), Mvélo+ and the FMD.
  • A relaunch is not ruled out: keep an eye on the official page and our national overview.
