Bike purchase grant in Montpellier, France, in 2026: €200 for used, nothing left for new

Verified on 16 October 2026: the Metropole's official form for used e-bikes, the City and Metropole page "Help to buy or repair my bike" (updated 8 April 2025), and the France Travail summary.

For years Montpellier had one of France's most popular e-bike premiums: €500 for a new e-bike, taken up by nearly 45,000 people by early 2024 according to the Metropole's own magazine. That premium for new bikes has ended. In 2026 the Metropole has made a clear choice: support used bikes and conversion kits, more modestly, but with no means test.

The used e-bike or kit grant in detail

The amount

€200 maximum, capped at 50% of the purchase price. A €600 used e-bike gets €200; a €350 fitted kit gets €175.

The conditions

  • Be an adult living in one of the municipalities of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole.
  • Buy a used e-bike or a conversion kit.
  • The purchase must have been made in a shop located within the Metropole, proven by the invoice. Online purchases are excluded, as are private second-hand sales.
  • Undertake not to sell the bike for 3 years.
  • No means test.
  • Open until 31 December 2026.

Why it is still worth it

€200 looks small next to the old €500. But on a refurbished e-bike at €800-1,200 sold with a warranty by a Montpellier workshop, the grant covers 15 to 25% of the price. And a well-fitted kit on your current bike can end up costing €200-400 net. To buy a refurbished bike well: battery, warranty and fair price.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Choose a physical shop in the Metropole that sells used bikes or fits kits.
  2. Ask for an invoice in your name stating that it is a used e-bike or a kit.
  3. Gather ID, proof of address, bank details (RIB) and invoice (the exact list is in the rules attached to the form).
  4. Apply via the Metropole's online form. If you have already sent a paper file, no need to redo it online.
  5. Wait for the transfer. A purchase order without an invoice is not accepted.

Stacking with the Region and the Département

GrantAmountFor which bikeStatus
Éco-chèque Mobilité – Occitanie Regionup to €200New e-bike, means-testedReferred to in 2026 by Toulouse Métropole
Éco-chèque Mobilités – sustainable mobility bonus (Occitanie)up to €400Employees receiving the FMDSame
Chèque Hérault Vélo – Département€250 (historical rules)New e-bike, means-testedNot confirmed for 2026

The trap: the regional grant only covers new bikes, the Metropole grant only used ones. So they cannot be combined on the same bike. In practice:

  • Buying new: only the regional (and possibly departmental) grant applies. Check the income ceilings and accepted sellers on the Occitanie Region website.
  • Buying used: €200 from the Metropole, nothing from the Region.

As for the Chèque Hérault Vélo, the Metropole states that the Département has stopped paying its Handi-Vélo grant; we could not confirm whether the "standard" voucher for a new e-bike remains open in 2026. Contact the Département before counting on it.

The sustainable mobility allowance, even more useful in Montpellier

Since late 2023, the Metropole's public transport has been free for its residents. Your employer therefore often has no pass to reimburse — all the more reason to ask it to introduce the forfait mobilités durables: up to €600 a year tax-free if you cycle to work (official page). Over two years, that's the price of an entry-level new e-bike.

Which bike for Montpellier?

The centre (Écusson, Antigone, Port Marianne) is compact, but the northern districts and outer towns are hilly and summer heat is harsh: electric assistance really earns its keep here. Choose a battery that copes with heat — store it in the shade, never in a car in the sun — and puncture-resistant tyres, as broken glass is common. Our comparisons: the best city bikes of 2026 and e-bikes under 20 kg. And if you'd rather not buy at all: long-term rental.

Key points

  • No more Metropole grant for a new e-bike in Montpellier.
  • €200 (50% max) for a used e-bike or a kit, no means test, from a shop in the Metropole, until 31/12/2026.
  • For new bikes, look at the Occitanie Region's éco-chèque.
  • Free public transport for residents: ask your employer for the FMD instead.
  • Comparison with other cities: the metropolitan overview.

Montpellier's grant is about used bikes: whether you're buying or selling, value your bike to know the fair price.
