Bike purchase grant in Rennes, France, in 2026: no premium, but STAR rental from €155 a year

Verified on 16 October 2026 on the official "Location longue durée" page of the STAR network and on mesaidesvelo.fr, the public grant finder that lists local schemes.

Let's be frank: in Rennes there is no grant for individuals buying a bike in 2026. Not from the City, Rennes Métropole, the Ille-et-Vilaine Département or the Brittany Region. The "up to €400 in Rennes" figures found on some websites do not match any official page.

The reason isn't a lack of interest in cycling — Rennes is one of the best-equipped cities in France — but a policy choice: the Metropole rents instead of subsidising. And for many people, that is better value than a premium.

STAR long-term rental, in figures

The STAR network offers e-bikes and cargo bikes on long-term rental, servicing included (replacement of wear parts and warranty repairs at the workshop).

  • Duration: 12 months, renewable once for 12 months.

Reduced (solidarity) rate€110

Cargo bikes and longtails

  • Duration: 6 months, not renewable.

The security deposit

A €1,000 security deposit (not cashed) is required for the classic e-bike, and €4,500 to €6,000 for cargo bikes. It is only taken if the bike is not returned or is damaged.

Rent or buy: the honest maths

Take a decent €1,600 city e-bike.

STAR rental, non pass holder€470Same

Over two years, renting wins hands down. Its limits: duration (24 months maximum for the e-bike, 6 months for a cargo bike), a single model, and no resale. The idea is to test: after two years you know exactly which bike to buy — battery size, frame, rack. Other levers in Rennes

The sustainable mobility allowance

Up to €600 a year tax-free paid by your employer if it has introduced the scheme, €900 combined with its contribution to your STAR pass (official page). It is the only "national" aid still available for cyclists in France, and in Rennes it can cover the whole of a STAR rental.

The STAR pass

Your employer must cover at least half of your public transport pass. As STAR pass holders pay €80 less a year for their e-bike, the bus-metro pass and bike rental go well together.

Your municipality's grants

Rennes Métropole has 43 municipalities. We found no active municipal grant for 2026, but check your town hall's website or the grant finder mesaidesvelo.fr.

Electric scooters and motorcycles

No more state grant since February 2025, and no local grant found.

Buying anyway, for less

If you want to own your bike — to modify it, keep it long-term or resell it:

  1. Refurbished or second-hand. With no grant rules to follow, you can buy anywhere. A two- or three-year-old e-bike in good condition often costs 50 to 60% of its new price. The battery is the key point: our refurbished e-bike guide.
  2. A conversion kit on a sound bike, as long as it stays compliant (250 W, cut-off at 25 km/h: the rules).
  3. Selling your old bike to fund the new one: value your bike to get the right price.
  4. Avoiding cut-price e-bikes sold online, often non-compliant and unrepairable: the pitfalls to know.

Questions we get asked

"Is STAR rental only for Rennes residents?" Access conditions (place of residence or work, documents, eligibility for the solidarity rate) are detailed on the STAR page: check them before going to an agency.

"What if I want to keep the bike at the end?" The STAR page does not mention a purchase option. Renting is for testing; buying happens afterwards, elsewhere.

"Is a rented bike insured against theft?" The €1,000 deposit covers the operator if the bike is not returned: a good-quality U-lock and secure parking are essential. Our guide to marking and trackers explains how to reduce the risk.

"Could a premium come back?" Nothing suggests so. If Rennes Métropole changed policy, the national overview would be updated.

Which bike for Rennes?

Rennes is not very hilly and rain is frequent: mudguards, reliable lights and 40 mm-plus tyres matter more than motor power. A light e-bike or even a good non-electric bike is enough inside the ring road; assistance becomes valuable from Cesson, Pacé or Chantepie. Our picks: the best city bikes of 2026 and e-bikes under 20 kg.
