Bike purchase grant in Marseille and Aix in 2026: the metropolitan low-emission-zone grant explained

Checked on 16 October 2026 on the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolitan Authority's ZFE page and in the rules for individuals. The rules date from autumn 2024 (grants open since 1 November 2024); the authority still presents them as current in October 2026, with no end date shown.

In the Bouches-du-Rhône département, the bike grant isn't called a "bike bonus": it is part of the package of *mobility grants linked to Marseille's low-emission zone (ZFE-m, zone à faibles émissions). That explains its slightly unusual logic: no income test for bikes, but a very precise geographical* condition. That's where many residents of Aix, Aubagne or La Ciotat get it wrong.

Who can get the bike grant?

You must meet two conditions:

  1. have your main residence within the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area;
  2. live, work or study inside Marseille's ZFE perimeter.

In practice:

SituationEligible?
You live in the Marseille ZFEYes
You live in Aix and work in the Marseille ZFEYes (proof of employment)
You live in Aubagne and study in Marseille inside the ZFEYes (enrolment certificate)
You live and work in AixNo
You live in Marseille outside the ZFE and work outside itNo

The exact ZFE perimeter is published by the Métropole: check your address or your employer's before buying.

No income test for the bike grant. A maximum of two adult beneficiaries per tax household.

Amounts

BikeRateCap
New or used e-bike50% of purchase price€400
Cargo, longtail or disability-adapted e-bike, new or used50% of purchase price€800

Total public grants cannot exceed the bike's price. An €800 e-bike is therefore enough to get the full €400; a €1,600 longtail is enough for the €800.

No grant for pedal bikes for individuals under this scheme: only electrically assisted bikes qualify.

Conditions on the bike

  • New or used — but a used e-bike must be bought from a professional. Private sales are excluded.
  • Lead-free battery.
  • Adult bike meeting current European standards. Speed bikes (above 25 km/h) are excluded: see our article on 25 and 45 km/h e-bikes.
  • Long-term rental and lease-to-own are excluded: you must buy.
  • Purchase after 1 November 2024, as shown on the invoice.
  • Don't resell the bike for 2 years: otherwise full repayment, and the authority may check documents or visit.

Step by step

  1. Check the perimeter: your home or your place of work/study must be inside the Marseille ZFE.
  2. Buy the e-bike from a professional (new or used), with an invoice in your name marked "paid".
  3. Apply within 6 months of purchase on the Métropole's grants portal: register, then fill in the "aide mobilité ZFE-m" form.
  4. Documents: signed form (which serves as a sworn commitment), bank details (RIB), valid ID, proof of address less than 3 months old, invoice and, if you don't live in the ZFE, proof of work (employment contract, self-employed registration) or study (enrolment certificate).
  5. If you can't apply online: paper application with proof of posting to Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, DGD Mobilités Durables, Infrastructures et Voirie – Aides ZFE, BP 48014, 13567 Marseille cedex 02.

Electric two-wheelers: the scrappage grant

This is one of the few French authorities still helping people buy an electric scooter, motorcycle, trike or quadricycle since the national bonus ended (February 2025). But the conditions are much stricter than for bikes:

CriterionCondition
HomeLive inside the Marseille ZFE
IncomeTaxable income per tax share ≤ €24,900
ScrappageA Crit'Air 4, 5 or unclassified vehicle (car, van or two-wheeler), owned for at least a year, insured for a year, free of finance, destroyed at an approved end-of-life centre within 3 months before or 6 months after the purchase
New vehicleElectric L-category (two- or three-wheeler, quadricycle), lead-free battery, new or used from a pro, registered in France
ExcludedE-scooters (kick), monowheels, Segways, hoverboards
Amount40% of the price, up to €400
CommitmentDon't resell for 2 years

So an old Crit'Air 4 or 5 petrol two-wheeler can be replaced by an electric one (the replacement rules allow it: an L-category vehicle can only be replaced by another L-category vehicle). At €400 maximum, the grant matters little on an electric motorcycle, more on a 50cc-equivalent scooter.

Other grants in the ZFE package

  • 12 months' free subscription to public transport (Pass Intégral, Pass Métropole, Pass XL on the permanent plan), to the LeVélo bike-share in Marseille or to LeVélo+ long-term e-bike rental, provided you sell or scrap a Crit'Air 4, 5 or unclassified vehicle. Apply within 3 months before or 6 months after the sale or destruction.
  • The Métropole's grants can be combined up to two per household. If one household member receives the vehicle grant (electric car or electric two-wheeler), only one other adult in the household can claim the e-bike grant or the subscription.

What about Aix, Aubagne, Martigues…?

The metropolitan grant is tied to Marseille's ZFE: someone living around Aix who doesn't work in Marseille isn't eligible. Some towns may have had their own schemes; we haven't checked any for 2026. Ask your town hall. On the employer side, the sustainable mobility allowance (forfait mobilités durables, up to €600 a year tax-free) applies everywhere: see our national overview.

Which e-bike for Marseille?

Marseille means climbs (Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, Le Roucas, the hills), wind and a high theft risk. Go for an e-bike with decent motor torque and hydraulic brakes, and budget for a serious lock. Ideas: the best city bikes of 2026, small front-load bikes and longtails and cargo bikes to make the most of the €800 cap. The grant accepts used bikes from a pro: a well-checked refurbished e-bike can come in at half price (what to check).

Key points

  • E-bike: 50% up to €400; cargo, longtail or adapted: 50% up to €800. No income test.
  • Key condition: live in the metropolitan area and live, work or study in the Marseille ZFE.
  • New or used from a pro, no rental, apply within 6 months, keep it 2 years.
  • Electric two-wheeler: 40% up to €400, income-tested and in exchange for scrapping a Crit'Air 4, 5 or unclassified vehicle.

Selling your old bike or scooter to switch to an e-bike? For a bike, start by valuing your bike: a fair price sells faster.
