The CFMoto 450MT reached France in 2024 with a killer argument: a proper 21-inch-front-wheel adventure bike, A2-licence compatible, for €6,490. It played a big part in the brand's jump in France (registrations more than doubled in the first half of 2025). Two years and several thousand bikes later, there is enough hindsight to separate forum myths from genuinely documented problems.

Two things to remember: the engine is a CFMoto design, not a KTM unit (people often confuse it with the 800MT — see who makes what). And 42 hp sits below the 35 kW A2 ceiling, so the bike can be ridden on an A2 licence without a restrictor.
Documented problems
We are talking about facts reported by identifiable sources — official notices, long-term tests, owner reports — not rumours.
The precautionary notice on early bikes (engine/transmission)
In 2024 CFMoto Mexico published a notice for owners of 450MTs built before 24 June 2024, based on information from the parent company: some units could suffer loss of power or abnormal noises in the transmission. The importer stressed that not every bike in the batch was affected, that the step was precautionary with an inspection protocol, and that later production already included the fixes. CFMoto Argentina said its bikes, from later batches, were not concerned.
For France and the UK we found no published recall for the 450MT at the time of writing (we checked the French RappelConso database; UK owners should check the DVSA recall service with their VIN). That doesn't mean no workshop campaign happened: manufacturers often handle such updates at service time without a public notice. If you buy a used 2024 450MT, have a dealer check with the frame number that all campaigns have been completed.
Fuelling calibration on early bikes
Owner reports and the specialist press mention, on early 450-family bikes, a slightly snatchy throttle at low revs and occasionally uneven idle, fixed with software updates at the dealer. A 11,000 km long-term test also noted a throttle that was "jerky at low rpm sometimes", which seemed to disappear after the 10,000 km service. On a used bike, ask for proof of those updates.
What an 11,000 km long-term test found
Adventure Motorcycling Handbook published an 11,000 km report:
- zero mechanical failures;
- original CST tyres replaced at around 8,000 km;
- original chain lasted the full 11,000 km with regular lubing;
- slightly slow gear changes at first, improved by adjusting clutch cable free play;
- traction control judged intrusive on loose surfaces (it can be switched off on the bar);
- average consumption around 4.2 l/100 km (68 UK mpg), roughly 400 km of range.
Finish complaints
Feedback on CFMoto owner forums (all sizes) is mostly about finish: fasteners that mark, fragile small plastic parts, connectors to keep an eye on. Nothing catastrophic, but a fresh-water rinse after winter road salt and dielectric grease on exposed connectors are not a luxury. Our general overview of Chinese motorcycles covers corrosion in detail.
The engine warning light
An engine light on a 450MT is read with the dealer's diagnostic tool. We have gathered reading methods and common causes in CFMoto: engine warning light and fault codes.
Servicing
The intervals below are those of the manufacturer's maintenance schedule as reproduced by reference sites; check them against your service book, which is what counts for the warranty.
| Job | Interval |
|---|---|
| First service | At running-in (see service book) |
| Oil + oil filter | Every 5,000 km or 6 months |
| Recommended oil | 10W-40, JASO MA2 |
| Valve clearance check | 40,000 km |
| Chain | Lube every 500 to 1,000 km, more often in the wet |
The 5,000 km oil-change interval is short: half of what many Japanese rivals specify. Over time this is the item that changes the budget: a rider doing 15,000 km a year does three oil changes where a Honda NX500 would need one or two. As a rough guide, allow around fifty euros of parts per oil change if you do it yourself (JASO MA2 oil + filter), more at a dealer with labour. Our motorcycle oil change guide shows you how.
Conversely, the 40,000 km valve check is widely spaced. When it comes, it is a heavier job on a twin (tank and cam covers off), so get a quote in advance.
Warranty: the French launch sheet announced 2 years parts and labour. Terms may have changed and differ by country: check with your importer before buying. To know what you can do yourself without losing cover, read manufacturer warranty and DIY servicing.
