Bike warranty in shop: what's covered (and what isn't)

What a warranty actually covers

The legal warranty of conformity (minimum 2 years in France) covers manufacturing defects, not wear or damage from use. In practice:

ItemCovered?
Frame (defect, crack unrelated to impact)Yes, often extended warranty (5 years to lifetime)
Bearings, fork, drivetrain (original defect)Yes, 2 years
E-bike battery and motorYes, 2 years (often minimum capacity guaranteed)
Tyres, chain, brake pads, cables (wear)No
Damage after crash or impactNo
Buckled wheel after a punctureNo (unless proven defect)

The pitfalls that void your warranty

  • Skipped maintenance: a manufacturer can refuse if recommended servicing hasn't been followed. Keep your receipts.
  • Poor home assembly on a safety-critical component.
  • Non-original parts fitted outside the network, on certain brands.
  • Missing the reporting deadline: flag a defect quickly, in writing.

How to build your case

Photograph the defect, date it, and describe it precisely. "Abnormal play in rear hub at 800 km, no impact" works better than "the wheel's making a noise". A manufacturing defect differs from wear by its nature and mileage.

AI helps you qualify the defect

Before heading back to the shop, ask L'Atelier's mechanic AI if your symptom looks like a manufacturing defect or normal wear. It gives you the technical grounds to argue your case, and saves you from either paying for a repair that should be free, or exhausting yourself claiming for uncovered wear.
