How much does it cost to assemble a new bike bought online?

The price of final assembly

A bike ordered online arrives "85% assembled": front wheel, handlebars, pedals, saddle and adjustments remain to be done. At the shop:

OptionPriceIncludes
Express final assembly£30 to £50Handlebars, front wheel, pedals, basic adjustments
Assembly + full check£50 to £90+ torque tightening, brake bleed if needed, safety check

Some shops refuse or overcharge for assembly of a bike not purchased from them. Ask first.

What's really critical

Three points don't tolerate shortcuts, because these are safety components:

  • The handlebars and stem: tightened to exact torque (often 5 to 6 N·m on carbon), otherwise it breaks or slips.
  • The brakes: lever reach, pad contact, and bleed if transport has introduced air.
  • Wheel attachment: quick release properly closed or through-axle at correct torque.

The rest (saddle, pedals, derailleur) can be finished calmly at home.

What you can finish yourself

Pedals, saddle height, fine gear adjustment: no risk with a bit of method. For gears, see adjusting your gears. The only real requirement for carbon is a torque wrench.

The AI gives you the torque specs for your model

The trap with home assembly is tightening. Too much, you crack the carbon; too little, it moves. Ask L'Atelier's mechanic AI for the exact torque specs for your stem, seatpost and brakes according to your brand. It also lists the assembly order and safety points not to miss.

You can thus finish a simple assembly yourself, and only pay the shop if a brake bleed is necessary. To compare purchase channels, see buying at the shop or online.
