Cost of chain and cassette replacement at a shop (and when it's justified)

Shop prices

ServicePartsLabourTotal estimate
Chain only£20 to £60£15 to £30£35 to £90
Chain + cassette£50 to £150£25 to £45£75 to £195
Chain + cassette + chainrings£90 to £250£40 to £70£130 to £320

The variation mostly comes down to drivetrain level (entry-level vs Shimano 105 / GRX / SRAM).

Why you're often told to "replace everything"

Because it's sometimes justified, sometimes just overly cautious. Here's the real logic:

  • A new chain on a worn cassette will skip under load. If the chain's been neglected too long, you need both.
  • If you change the chain in time (at 0.75% wear), the cassette lasts 2 to 3 chains. You only pay for the chain then.

It all comes down to timing. The measurement method is in bike chain: when to replace it.

The test to do before getting a quote

Imagine fitting a new chain: if it skips on the most-used sprockets under load, the cassette is done for. Otherwise, chain only. An honest shop will do this test in front of you.

Also check cassette compatibility / freehub body before ordering—it's the most common mistake in online purchases.

Avoid over-repair with AI

Tell L'Atelier's AI mechanic your mileage, drivetrain type, and what you're experiencing. It'll tell you whether the cassette is likely shot too, or if a chain alone will do, and give you the exact torque setting for installation. You walk into the shop with an independent opinion, or fit it yourself.

Logical next step: repair yourself or visit a shop.
