The variation mostly comes down to drivetrain level (entry-level vs Shimano 105 / GRX / SRAM).
Why you're often told to "replace everything"
Because it's sometimes justified, sometimes just overly cautious. Here's the real logic:
- A new chain on a worn cassette will skip under load. If the chain's been neglected too long, you need both.
- If you change the chain in time (at 0.75% wear), the cassette lasts 2 to 3 chains. You only pay for the chain then.
It all comes down to timing. The measurement method is in bike chain: when to replace it.
