Taking your bikes on vacation or to riding spots requires the right bike rack — and the wrong choice is hassle at every loading, or even a bike at risk. Three families exist, each with its trade-offs.
On towbar: the most comfortable
The bike rack on hitch ball is the most practical: low loading height (so easy, even for a heavy e-bike), good stability, often tilting to access the trunk. You need a hitch on the car. It's the top choice for heavy bikes and frequent use.
On tailgate (straps): the budget option
The bike rack on tailgate is fixed by straps to the trunk. Cheap, light, no hitch required — but less stable loading, trunk access blocked, and compatibility to check depending on tailgate shape. Good for occasional use and light bikes.
On roof: the all-rounder
The roof rack frees up the rear and lets you fit more bikes, but you have to hoist the bike up high (a dealbreaker for an e-bike) and watch out for total height (parking garages, car ports). It increases fuel consumption.

Safety and regulations
The bike rack must not hide the license plate or lights: many require a moveable plate + auxiliary lights. Strap the wheels and frames, and check tightness at every stop.
