Front derailleur adjustment: step-by-step guide

Why is the front derailleur so finicky?

The front derailleur must shift the chain between 2 or 3 chainrings while tolerating a chain line that varies depending on the selected rear cog. The margin for error is slim: 0.5 to 1 mm clearance on each side of the chain. If the height, angle, or limit screws are off, the chain rubs or won't shift.

Note: if your bike runs a single chainring (1x), you don't have a front derailleur. This trend has taken over MTB and is gaining ground on road bikes. But if you have a 2x or 3x setup, this guide is for you.

Step 1: Check the height

The outer cage of the derailleur should sit 1-3 mm above the tallest tooth on the large chainring. Too high = slow, imprecise shifting. Too low = the cage rubs on the teeth.

  • Loosen the clamp bolt (or direct-mount bolt)
  • Put the chain on the large chainring
  • Adjust height: 1-3 mm clearance between the bottom of the cage and the top of the teeth
  • Tighten to 5-7 Nm (clamp) or 4-5 Nm (direct mount)

Step 2: Set the angle (alignment)

Viewed from above, the outer cage plate should be perfectly parallel to the large chainring. Even a slight angle causes rubbing on one side.

  • Look from directly above, at eye level
  • The outer cage should follow the exact curve of the large chainring
  • Adjust by rotating the derailleur before tightening the clamp

Step 3: Low limit screw (L)

This screw prevents the chain from dropping inward (toward the frame).

  1. Release the cable (loosen the cable anchor bolt)
  2. Put the chain on the small chainring + largest cog (the most crossed inward position)
  3. Turn the L screw until the inner cage plate is 0.5-1 mm from the chain without touching it
  4. Verify: the chain shouldn't rub, but the cage should be close enough to prevent the chain from falling off toward the frame

Step 4: Set the cable tension

  1. Shift the rear derailleur to the smallest cog
  2. Set the front shifter to the small chainring position
  3. Pull the cable by hand to remove slack
  4. Secure the cable with the anchor bolt while maintaining slight tension
  5. Don't max out the barrel adjuster yet — you'll fine-tune after

Step 5: High limit screw (H)

This screw prevents the chain from dropping outward (toward the crank).

  1. Put the chain on the large chainring + smallest cog (the most crossed outward position)
  2. Turn the H screw until the outer cage plate is 0.5-1 mm from the chain
  3. Verify that the chain shifts onto the large chainring without hesitation

Step 6: Fine-tune cable tension

  1. Pedal while shifting between small and large chainring, back and forth
  2. If the chain hesitates to climb onto the large chainring → increase tension (1/4 turn of barrel adjuster, counter-clockwise)
  3. If the chain rubs the cage when on the large chainring + large cogs → decrease tension (1/4 turn clockwise)
  4. The goal: clean shifts without rubbing in the most common chainring/cog combinations

Common mistakes

  • Setting limit screws with the cable tensioned: always release the cable before touching L and H screws
  • Ignoring height: 90% of front derailleur issues come from incorrect height
  • Forcing the shift: if the chain won't go up, don't force it. Check height first, then limits, then tension
  • Frayed cable: a damaged cable slides poorly in the housing and makes adjustment impossible. Replace it first
  • Housing too long or too short: housing that makes a sharp bend creates friction and prevents smooth shifting

Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo: any differences?

The principle is identical. Variations include:

  • Shimano: the cage has a slight outward angle. Some models have a micro-adjustment screw (FD-R8000, FD-R7000)
  • SRAM: Yaw systems (FD that pivots instead of translating). The high limit adjustment is slightly different
  • Campagnolo: integrated micro-adjustment screw. Procedure similar to Shimano
