Trade-in at a dealer or private sale: which to choose?

When it's time to change motorcycles, two options: trade-in at a dealer, or private sale. One favors simplicity, the other the price. The right choice depends on your priorities. Here's how to decide.

Trade-in at a dealer

The dealer takes your motorcycle, often as a deduction from a new purchase.

  • Advantages: fast, simple, no need to post an ad or deal with strangers; paperwork is handled; sometimes a tax/commercial benefit coupled to the purchase.
  • Disadvantage: the price is lower — the dealer needs to make a profit, warrant and resell. Expect a discount compared to a private sale.

Private sale

You sell yourself, hand to hand.

  • Advantage: the best price (you capture the dealer's margin).
  • Disadvantages: managing the ad and photos, visits, test rides, payment security, and the time it takes.

How to decide

  • You lack time or are buying from the same dealer → trade-in makes sense.
  • You want the best price and are willing to manage the sale → private sale wins.
  • Hybrid solution: get a written trade-in offer, compare it to the private sale value, and decide if the difference is worth the effort.

The right reflex

Don't compare a trade-in offer to the new price, but to the actual used value. It's the only honest benchmark — see the valuation method and how to sell your motorcycle.

The dealer is offering to trade in my motorcycle, but the offer seems low. Is that normal?
L'Atelier
Partly yes: a trade-in is always below a private sale, because the dealer needs to profit, warrant and resell the motorcycle. The real question isn't "trade-in vs new price" but "trade-in vs private value". Check your motorcycle's value, compare the gap, and see if it's worth the time and hassle of selling yourself. If you lack time or are buying locally, the trade-in may be worth the convenience.
