# Royal Enfield Himalayan: maintenance guide and key points to watch
The Royal Enfield Himalayan is an accessible, straightforward and rugged trail bike, designed for budget-conscious adventure riding. Its single-cylinder engine prioritises low-end torque over outright performance. This mechanical simplicity is a strength: with a little method, most maintenance can be done at home.
Simple mechanics, but requiring attention
The Himalayan's single-cylinder is rugged, but that doesn't mean you can neglect it. On the contrary, consistency matters more than sophistication. Plan your MOT inspection annually (once the bike is 3 years old), and use that as a prompt to check over the essentials.
| Operation | Indicative interval |
|---|---|
| Oil and filter change | 5,000 to 10,000 km |
| Valve clearance check | 10,000 km |
| Air filter | 10,000 km or sooner if dusty |
| Spark plug | 12,000 km |
| Coolant (where fitted) | 2 years |
If you use the bike off-road in dusty conditions, shorten air-filter intervals significantly. See our guide motorcycle air-filter maintenance.
Oil and lubrication
The Himalayan requires a semi- or full-synthetic JASO MA2 engine oil, typically 10W-50 or 15W-50 depending on climate. The clutch is wet, so standard car oil is not suitable.
- Oil capacity approximately 2 to 2.5 L depending on version.
- Check level when hot using the sight glass.
- Full details on oil standards are in our article motorcycle oil viscosity and standards.
Representative torque values
Indicative values only; verify for your specific year of manufacture. Royal Enfield has evolved the platform, particularly with recent versions.
| Component | Indicative torque |
|---|---|
| Spark plug | 15 Nm |
| Drain plug | 25 Nm |
| Front axle | 65 Nm |
| Rear wheel nut | 90 Nm |
| Brake calliper | 25 Nm |
For the technique of torque wrench use, see the motorcycle torque wrench guide.
