Two giants, two philosophies
Stihl and Husqvarna have dominated the power tools market for decades. Both make excellent products — but they don't target exactly the same user. Here's an honest, unbiased comparison.
The history in brief
Stihl (founded 1926, Germany): family-owned, not publicly traded. Sold exclusively through authorized dealers — you won't find Stihl on Amazon or at big box stores (except the consumer AK range). It's a deliberate strategy: Stihl wants customers to be advised by a specialist.
Husqvarna (founded 1689, Sweden): the oldest arms manufacturer turned... chainsaw king. Publicly traded (Husqvarna Group, which also owns Gardena). Wider distribution: specialized dealers + some big retailers.
Category-by-category comparison

Stihl's MS 500i is the only electronically fuel-injected chainsaw on the market. It's a technological marvel, but at €1,500, it's reserved for intensive pros.

Battery platforms
This is a decisive criterion in 2026. If you buy a battery chainsaw, you're committing to an ecosystem.
Stihl AP System: the pro range (AP 100-500 S). 36 V batteries from 94 to 337 Wh. Compatible with all Stihl pro machines (chainsaws, trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers). About 15 compatible tools.
Husqvarna BLi: 36 V batteries from 94 to 337 Wh as well. Compatible with the entire Husqvarna pro range. About 12 compatible tools.
Stihl AK System: the consumer range (smaller, cheaper). 36 V batteries from 72 to 144 Wh. NOT compatible with AP — be careful not to mix them.
Both platforms are excellent and comparable in runtime. The choice mainly depends on the nearest dealer network and the tools you need.
