Tubeless drags two opposite stories behind it, and neither of them is true. On one side, the marketing promise: never puncture again. On the other, the irritation of the rider who spent an entire Sunday trying to seat a stubborn tyre with a track pump before going to dig an inner tube out of a drawer. Three seasons of hindsight, two bikes, a gravel bike and a mountain bike, are enough to settle it item by item.
The summary fits on one line: tubeless is an excellent choice for anyone who rides a lot, at low pressure, on ground full of thorns and flint. It is a poor choice for anyone who rides rarely, at high pressure, or who does not want another consumable to keep an eye on. The rest of this article is the detail, with the ballpark figures.
The real gain is pressure, not punctures
The "no more punctures" line is simply false: you still puncture, it is just that the small perforations seal themselves. The gain that genuinely changes how the bike rides sits somewhere else. With no tube, there is no longer any risk of pinching the casing against the rim. You can therefore drop the pressure without the nagging fear of a snakebite, and that is what transforms the bike.
On a mountain bike on 2.4in tyres, riders routinely go from 2.0 to 2.2 bar with tubes down to 1.4 to 1.7 bar tubeless. On a gravel bike on 40 to 45 mm, from 3.0 bar down to 2.0 to 2.5 bar. On the road on 28 mm the gap narrows: 5.0 bar against 4.2 to 4.7 bar. The wider the tyre and the rougher the ground, the clearer the gain; on a road bike running high pressure and skinny rubber it becomes marginal. Sealant is a consumable, and that is the real cost
This is the part nobody mentions at the point of sale. Sealant dries out, and it dries out even if the bike never moves. Three things speed it up: heat, how porous the tyre sidewalls are, and the number of punctures already sealed, each of which uses up product.
Observed ballpark figures:
- Dose: 30 to 60 ml per wheel for road and narrow gravel, 60 to 90 ml for wide gravel, 80 to 120 ml for mountain bike tyres depending on width.
- Service life: 2 to 6 months. Nearer 2 to 3 months with a hot summer and a supple-sidewall tyre, nearer 4 to 6 months with a thick casing in a cool garage.
- Cost: a litre generally sits somewhere between £12 and £25, which works out as a genuine yearly consumable of £18 to £35 for two wheels topped up three times.
Dry sealant protects nothing at all, and turns into latex balls rolling around inside the tyre and throwing the wheel out of balance. You check it through the valve, core removed, with a spoke or a plastic rod: if nothing wet comes back out, it needs topping up. That is five minutes per wheel. Not doing it is by far the most common reason people end up disappointed with tubeless.
The puncture that will not seal
Sealant closes perforations up to roughly 2 to 3 mm. Beyond that — a flint cut, a sidewall gash, the tyre unseating on an impact — you have to step in. Three levels, in order:
- The tubeless plug: you push it in from the outside without removing the tyre, then reinflate. It works, it is quick, and it often lasts until the tyre is worn out. A plug kit costs £8 to £18 and it belongs in your saddle pack, not on the workshop bench.
- The spare inner tube: yes, you still have to carry one. That is the irony of tubeless. You have to take the valve core out, pull the tubeless valve, and fit a tube inside a tyre full of sealant, often at the roadside, often in the rain. It is doable, it is just messy and slow: reckon on 15 to 20 minutes against 5 to 8 for a conventional repair.
- The CO2 canister or the mini pump: essential, bearing in mind that CO2 makes some sealants clot faster. Plenty of riders top the sealant back up after a CO2 roadside fix.

Fitting: where it is won or lost
A successful tubeless fit comes down to three things, and if one is missing the rest is a fight: a rim genuinely designed for it (marked tubeless ready or equivalent, with a proper double-hump bed), rim tape laid on with no creases and no bubbles, and enough airflow to snap both beads home in one go.
That last point is what stops people. An ordinary track pump is sometimes enough with a tight new tyre; it often fails with a used one whose beads have taken the shape of the packing box. At that point you need a pump with an air chamber, a compressor or a canister. A rim that was never designed for it, or a rim and tyre combination that is simply too loose, cannot be rescued with extra layers of tape: that is a time bomb that will unseat mid-corner.
