A typical city e-bike weighs 23 to 28 kg. On the flat you don't feel it: the motor does the work. You pay for the weight elsewhere, every day: three flights of stairs with no lift, the train step, the cellar, the bike store where you lift it onto a hook, and the bike you push home with a flat battery. Going under 20 kg changes that daily routine. Here are the models that manage it in 2026, and what they sacrifice to get there.
How to read a claimed weight
Before comparing, three precautions, because spec sheets don't all measure the same thing:
- With or without battery? A 360 to 500 Wh battery generally weighs 2 to 3 kg. Some makers quote the weight without it.
- Which size? Weight is often given for the smallest frame size.
- Which equipment? Mudguards, rack, lights and kickstand easily add 1.5 to 2.5 kg. A "14 kg" e-bike sold bare will weigh 16 kg once set up for town.
The only figure that matters is the ready-to-ride weight, battery in and kit fitted. Weigh it in the shop with a luggage scale if in doubt: that's the weight you'll carry.
How a light e-bike is made
Three technical choices recur on almost every model:
- A small rear hub motor (often 40 to 45 Nm), sometimes a lightened mid-drive, rather than a 65 to 85 Nm mid-drive that alone weighs 2.5 to 3 kg.
- A compact battery, 250 to 360 Wh, built into the down tube, instead of the 500 to 700 Wh of touring e-bikes.
- A simple drivetrain: single speed, belt, or few gears.
The frame is aluminium, more rarely carbon on expensive models.

"n/a": not stated in the sources consulted. Prices from brand sites or dealers between 2023 and October 2026, in euros; UK prices differ (Brompton and Gocycle are British brands with their own UK pricing). Check on the day: these brands change prices often.
Fiido Air: the lightest, to watch closely
Carbon frame, Gates belt, 13.75 kg claimed: on paper the record of this selection under 2,000 €. But it's a bike from a Chinese online brand, single speed, with minimal city kit and after-sales handled online. Our general notes on the brand are in Fiido: reviews and problems, and the match with high-street chains in Chinese e-bikes vs Decathlon.
Tenways CGO600: the best weight-to-price ratio
About 16 kg with a belt, 1,099 € for the base version when checked. The 252 Wh battery limits real range: in a flat town on a middle setting, expect to charge every two or three days for 15 km a day. The Pro version (360 Wh, 1,699 €) extends range for the same claimed weight. The logical pick for an upper-floor flat in a flat city.
Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2: light despite a mid-drive
The exception: a 50 Nm mid-drive and a 520 Wh battery for 15.9 kg, thanks to the carbon frame. It climbs better than every hub motor on the list. The price (6,200 € for this version, 6,500 € with mudguards and rack) reserves it for those who want a light e-bike and hills. Specialized also makes cheaper, heavier aluminium versions: check the exact weight of the version you're looking at.
Ampler Curt: the sporty one
Estonian brand Ampler claims a Curt from 14.1 kg. It's a fast bike, bordering on gravel, more than an equipped city bike. For urban use, look at the brand's comfort models too, but their weight wasn't shown on the page consulted.
Brompton Electric and Gocycle: the folders
A folding e-bike around 17 kg goes on the train, the Tube or in a lift. The price is high (over 3,000 €), and small wheels absorb cobbles less well. The full folding comparison is in folding bikes: the 2026 comparison.
Cowboy 4: the upper limit
18.9 kg battery included, rear hub motor, connected. Bought by French group Rebirth (Peugeot Cycles, Solex, Gitane) in 2025, Cowboy announced it would restart production in France in early 2026. If you're after a used step-through version, check it isn't affected by the 2025 frame recall: it's all in the step-through frame guide and our Cowboy 4 review.
What lightness costs you
| What you gain | What you lose |
|---|---|
| Easy carrying (stairs, train, wall hook) | Range: 250 to 360 Wh battery, so 30 to 60 km real-world depending on use |
| A bike that's pleasant to pedal unassisted | Torque: 40-45 Nm on a hub motor, less at ease on steep climbs |
| Agility | Sometimes minimal kit (no rack, light lighting) |
| Fewer heavy wear parts | Higher price for the same equipment |
Ranges are ballparks: they depend on rider weight, gradient, assist mode, wind and temperature. In cold weather a battery loses some capacity: see e-bike batteries and temperature.
The practical rule: multiply your daily round trip by three. If the result exceeds the bike's realistic range, you'll charge every evening, and a light e-bike becomes less practical than it looks.
