It's probably the most asked question in motorcycle forums: "MT-07 or Z650?" Both are mid-size naked bikes available in A2-restricted and full-power versions. They target the same audience at the same price. But they're very different in character. Here's the point-by-point showdown.

Engine: Advantage MT-07
The Yamaha CP2 is the star engine of the segment. Its 270-degree crank gives it a unique, almost V-twin character. Torque is available from 3,000 rpm, the rev climb is exhilarating, and the sound is intoxicating.
The Kawasaki parallel twin is more conventional: 180-degree firing order, smoother, more linear. It doesn't lack power but it lacks the CP2's character. On the highway, the Z650 may be more pleasant as it vibrates less at high rpm.
Engine verdict: MT-07 wins hands down. If engine character is your number one priority, case closed.
Chassis: Advantage Z650
Where the Z650 fights back is the chassis. The steel trellis frame is stiffer, the 41 mm fork is better damped stock, and weight is distributed lower. In corners, the Z650 inspires more confidence, especially for novices.
The MT-07 long suffered from a soft rear shock. Yamaha improved things since 2021, but the Z650 remains more balanced out of the box. The MT-07 transforms with an aftermarket rear shock (YSS, Ohlins, Hyperpro — around 300-500 EUR).
Chassis verdict: Z650 stock, MT-07 with an upgraded shock.
Comfort: Advantage Z650
The Z650 is lower (790 mm vs 805 mm), reassuring for shorter riders. The riding position is slightly more upright, the seat is wider and better padded. The 15 L tank gives 20-30 km extra range.
Comfort verdict: Z650, especially for daily commuting and weekend rides.
