Setting up a home workshop: bench, lighting and storage

Most home workshops fail on the same three points, and none of them has anything to do with tools. The bench is too low and too flexible, so you end up working on the floor. The lighting is a single fitting in the middle of the ceiling, so you work in your own shadow. And nothing has a place of its own, so you spend a quarter of your time hunting for the 13 mm spanner you were holding five minutes ago.

All three are solved for a few hundred pounds, long before you buy the £500 roller cabinet or the welder. Here are the numbers that matter — heights, lumens, cable sizes, air flow rates — and an order of spending that gives you a usable workshop from the very first stage.

The bench: height first

This is the one dimension you won't be able to correct easily later, and the one that decides whether you spend two hours or twenty minutes standing at it. Starting point: stand up straight, arms by your sides, and measure the height of your elbow.

If you only remember one thing: a bench that is too high tires your shoulders, a bench that is too low wrecks your back and stops you putting any weight behind a file. When in doubt, aim for the top of the range and stand on a duckboard if you need to.

Rigidity, second

It isn't the thickness of the top that makes a bench stable, it's the triangle. A beautiful 40 mm beech top on four unbraced legs will move with every hammer blow.

  • A rigid frame: 40 x 40 mm box section or angle iron as a minimum, with a diagonal brace at the back and a low cross rail. That's what stops the whole thing racking.
  • The top: solid beech 35 to 40 mm, or 30 mm plywood faced with 2 mm steel sheet if you hammer and weld on it. Chipboard swells the first time you spill oil.
  • Bolting it to the wall is the best pound you'll spend in the whole workshop. Two brackets and four plugs kill 90 % of the movement.
  • Mass matters: under 80 kg, a bench walks backwards when you file. A bottom drawer full of tools does the job nicely.
  • Useful dimensions: 150 to 200 cm (60 to 79 in) long, 60 to 70 cm (24 to 28 in) deep. Beyond 70 cm the back of the bench becomes a graveyard.

The vice is bolted right through with M10 or M12 and a backing plate under the top, never with woodscrews, 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) in from the edge and slightly angled so you can hold a long part vertically. Jaws of 100 to 125 mm cover everything you'll do on a motorcycle or a bike.

Lighting: lumens, uniformity, CRI

A standard garage sits at 50 to 100 lux, three to ten times less than you need. The accepted orders of magnitude: around 150 lux to move about, 300 lux for general work, 500 to 750 lux for fine mechanical work, 1,000 lux for surface inspection or paint.

The sum is simple: lumens needed = target lux x floor area, divided by about 0.7 to allow for losses. A 20 m² garage at 500 lux therefore needs around 14,000 lumens in total, which is three or four 4,000 lumen LED battens — £18 to £35 each.

Three criteria nobody looks at, and they make all the difference:

  • Colour temperature: 4,000 K, neutral white. Below that you stop seeing shades; at 6,000 K it tires the eyes quickly and wire colours look washed out.
  • CRI of 90 or above if you need to identify cable colours, judge a paint shade or read a wear pattern. 80 is an acceptable minimum elsewhere.
  • No flicker. Bargain-basement battens strobe at mains frequency. It's tiring, and above all it's dangerous: on a grinder or a drill, a stroboscopic effect can make a spinning part look stationary. Free test: film the light with your phone, and if the image bands, walk away.

Finally, the real problem in a garage isn't the lumen count, it's cast shadows. Two side sources light a job better than a single central source twice as powerful. Add a rechargeable magnetic LED inspection lamp of 500 to 1,000 lumens, and above all a head torch: at £20, it's the most useful light in the workshop, because it always points where you're looking.

Electrics: what you actually need

A workshop pulls peaks that a single extension lead from the house will not take. A 2 to 3 hp compressor, a welder, a charger and an angle grinder do not belong on a lighting circuit.

  • A dedicated circuit from the consumer unit: 2.5 mm² for the sockets, 1.5 mm² for the lighting, with matching protection. If a welder or a compressor is on the horizon, size it in from the start — running a new cable afterwards costs twice as much.
  • 30 mA RCD protection on everything feeding the workshop: that's what saves you when you drill into a wall or a casing goes live. What you may do yourself and what has to be certified varies locally, and a new installation deserves to be signed off by a qualified electrician.
  • Six to eight sockets spread around, two of them above the bench at 110-120 cm (43 to 47 in) and one at ceiling level for the cable reel. In a damp space, go for IP44. And check the fuse in each plug actually matches the flex it protects — a 13 A fuse in everything is a habit worth breaking.
  • A cable reel is never left coiled under heavy load. Wound cable can't shed heat, so it warms up and melts its own sheath. Unwind it completely above 1,000 W.
  • Work dead, and prove it's dead rather than trusting the label on the breaker.

Ventilation: solvents, batteries, exhaust

This is the part everyone skips, and the only one that can kill you.

  • Solvent vapours are heavier than air: brake cleaner, degreaser and aerosol paint pool at floor level, exactly where you're lying. Two openings, one low and one high, or a 100 to 150 mm extractor rated at 150 to 250 m³/h.
  • Never run an engine with the door shut. Carbon monoxide is odourless and disabling within minutes. If you start engines indoors, a CO alarm costs £20 to £35 and goes up in thirty seconds.
  • Charging a lead-acid battery gives off hydrogen, explosive at low concentrations. You don't charge in a closed cupboard, and not next to anything that sparks.
  • Grinding and welding sparks: they carry 8 to 10 metres and they bounce. Nothing flammable within that radius, and a 6 kg ABC dry powder extinguisher on the wall by the door, not at the back of the workshop.

Storage: the three-zone rule

Time lost searching is the real cost of a badly organised workshop, and the fix is distance, not more furniture.

  • Zone 1, arm's reach from the bench: the twenty tools that do 90 % of the work. Pegboard or shadow board, visible, never in a drawer. A gap is obvious immediately.
  • Zone 2, two steps away: the roller cabinet, one drawer per family, cut foam for complete sets. What separates a £220 cabinet from a £700 one is the ball-bearing slides and the load rating per drawer, 25 to 40 kg; a cheap box twists once it's loaded.
  • Zone 3, high up or at the back: seasonal kit, consumables, parts waiting their turn, in labelled bins. Anything unlabelled becomes unfindable within six months.

Fasteners sorted by diameter and length in small bins are probably the storage decision that saves the most real time — more than any tool. On what deserves buying first, the tool kit that covers 90 % of jobs gives a realistic list.

The floor, and the budget in stages

Bare concrete makes dust, drinks oil and chills you through your feet. Floor paint at £7 to £13/m², lasting 3 to 5 years; epoxy resin at £20 to £40/m², durable but unforgiving about preparation; clip-together PVC tiles at £18 to £35/m², layable single-handed and tolerant of an uneven slab. And an anti-fatigue mat at £20 to £35 in front of the bench, the only comfort purchase that genuinely increases how long you can stand.

Where to start this weekend

  1. Measure your elbow height and settle on a bench height before you buy anything at all.
  2. Bolt the bench to the wall and fit the vice with through-bolts and a backing plate.
  3. Put up two side battens of 4,000 lumens at 4,000 K, rather than one central fitting.
  4. Get a dedicated circuit run with sockets above the worktop.
  5. Create zone 1: twenty tools visible at arm's reach, everything else further away.
  6. Hang the extinguisher by the door and check the ventilation before the first time you open a tin of solvent.
