11-speed cassette on a 10-speed frame: is it compatible?

The trick question

"My 10-speed cassette is worn, I'd like to upgrade to 11-speed on my 2014 frame, will it work?" Short answer: it depends on 3 elements, and not on the frame.

The 3 real blockers

1. Freehub body

The pivot of the question. An 11-speed Shimano road cassette needs a freehub body 2.5 mm longer than a 10-speed.

2. Rear derailleur

A 10-speed derailleur doesn't have the right cable-pull ratio for 11-speed.

3. Shifters

Same as the derailleur: the ratio differs. A 10-speed shifter will never make 11 gears.

Real total cost

400-850€ + workshop labour for a full 10v→11v conversion.
