Winter bike tyres: grip, studded tyres and pressure in cold weather

Winter cycling is possible and enjoyable — provided you have grip under your wheels. Wet ground, leaves, patches of ice: the tyre makes all the difference between a smooth ride and a skid. Here's how to equip yourself.

What changes in winter

Cold hardens the tyre compound and reduces grip, rain and leaves eliminate traction, and frost turns a puddle into an ice rink. A summer slick tyre on cold wet roads is the best way to fall.

The right tyre for the conditions

• Rain and wet roads: a tyre with a soft compound and light tread evacuates water and grips better. A slightly wider section, inflated a bit less firmly, increases contact surface.
• Muddy trails / MTB: more pronounced treads to bite.
• Occasional frost and snow: a specific winter tyre with cold-adapted compound.
• Regular ice (commute cycling): studded tyres (small tungsten studs) are the only true solution on ice. Loud and slower on dry ground, but unbeatable on icy roads.

Pressure, to lower (slightly)

Cold causes pressure to drop, and slightly lower pressure increases ground contact and grip on slippery surfaces. Stay within the tyre's recommended range — see the pressure chart — and inflate toward the lower end of the range in winter.

Maintenance that matters
